Coach Waheed Mitchell
Most recently he coached at the Balboa School in Escondido. Prior to that he was the Head Boys Varsity Basketball Coach at Chaparral High School. Prior to his arrival to Chaparral, Mitchell spent one season as assistant with Armstrong’s Temecula Valley Golden Bears. He helped lead the program to a 26-5 season and its first undefeated league record going 10-0.
Before his year at Temecula Valley, the veteran of 12 years in coaching built an impressive resume as a Head Coach at Horizon High School and The Rock Academy. In that stretch, Mitchell earned San Diego Coach of the Year honors, 6 conference titles, 3 San Diego CIF Section titles, 2 Southern California CIF Regional Appearances and 1 CIF State Championship title.
Under Mitchell’s watch in the 2006 season Horizon High School went 26-3, ranked 13th in the State while winning the State Championship all in Mitchell’s first year as Head Coach. His next two seasons Mitchell’s teams won both league and sections titles and reaching the CIF Southern Section final four and regionals finals. Mitchell finished with a record of 97-26 as Head Coach at Horizon High School.
In 2010, Mitchell guided the Rock Academy to the school’s first CIF San Diego Section Championship appearance and State tournament berth. Winning its first state tournament game. Going 56-30 in his three years, and 30-0 in conference as Head Coach at the Rock Academy.
Born in San Diego, CA. Mitchell attended Lincoln High School where he was a 3 year letter in Baseball. Mitchell then switched gears and attended San Diego City College to play basketball, where he was 1st team all-conference and sophomore athlete of the year. (97-99). He earned a basketball scholarship to attend Notre Dame de Namur University, where he helped the Argonauts to an undefeated league title in 2001 and a National Tournament berth under Head Coach Gerry Frietas.
Mitchell earned his BA in Liberal Studies, Sociology in 2002.
He and his wife Brandy have three daughters Brittany 22, Breanna 14 and Bailee 11.
