About POD

Prospects on Deck (POD) helps student-athletes achieve their goals by fostering their passion for basketball. POD’s unique method effectively gives our mentees the tools necessary to excel at a high level both on the court and in the classroom. In addition, POD endeavors to instill in young people social, environmental, and global awareness and to help the future generation understand their role in a sustainable world, take ownership of their actions and contribute to the wellbeing of their community.

About Coach Derrick O'Neil

Derrick grew up in Moreno Valley, CA where he lettered in basketball for Valley View high school and the Laurinburg Institute. He went on to attend junior college at Florida State College in Jacksonville, FL where he earned All Florida Junior College First Team honors. Derrick was awarded a basketball scholarship at Florida Gulf Coast University where he was voted team captain for 2 years and received a B.A. in Communications. Upon graduation, Derrick went on to play basketball professionally in the NBA D-League, China, Japan, Taiwan, and most recently in the famed LA Drew League with Klay Thompson as his teammate.

He has been coaching and training student-athletes for the past 6 years. He has worked successfully with over 100 young student-athletes. In addition to running POD, Derrick works for Linfield Christian High School in Temecula, CA where he serves as the Head of Basketball Operations. He also teaches PE and works for the Athletics Department. As Head of Basketball Operations Derrick has head coaching responsibilities for both the Women’s and Men’s program.

Derrick is a young, positive, energetic person, and uses these qualities to motivate his players and instill confidence, passion, and work ethic on and off the court.
